Sonja Bijelic

Sonja Bijelić, AIA, is an award winning architect with over 20 years of experience. Sonja graduated from the University of Belgrade with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture Engineering and earned her Master’s Degree in Architecture from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where she later taught studio courses. Before founding ArchSTUDIO2227, she worked for Philip Johnson and John Burgee in New York, after which she joined Hillier in 1992 and later on became an associate principal.

Sonja Bijelić can be described as a high-design architect who is equally adept at managing complex projects. She gained international recognition for adapting a 1916 power plant into high-tech headquarters for Synygy and gained numerous architectural awards for the addition to the Virginia State Capitol, designed by Thomas Jefferson. She has worked on projects throughout the U.S., including those for the US Supreme Court, a Virgin Spa at Natirar and the Temple University Event Center that also involves combining high design with historic structures.
